Honors and Awards

Dr. Bhayani has received several national and international academic awards at laparoscopic surgical conferences and at the American Urological Association’s annual meetings. His work paper and instructional videos have received commendation from major urological societies. He has received awards for helping to pioneer new techniques in the surgical management of patients with kidney, prostate, and testicular cancer.

Clinical Interests

Background: Dr. Bhayani is a recognized leader in the treatment of prostate cancers and kidney cancers, tumors and masses in a minimally invasive fashion (laparoscopic and robotic). In addition to his 10 years in training at Washington University, he also performed an intense two-year fellowship and specialization in endourology, laparoscopic surgery and da Vinci® robotic surgery at the renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has taught several courses on kidney cancer treatment to practicing urologists. His surgical techniques and instructional videos have won awards at major urological meetings. His practice concentrates on laparoscopic and robotic surgery of the kidney and prostate, particularly for cancers.

Robotic Surgery: Dr. Bhayani uses the da Vinci robotic platform to perform robotic prostatectomy, robotic kidney removal (da Vinci nephrectomy) and robotic partial nephrectomy in selected cases. Dr. Bhayani became certified in da Vinci robotic surgery in 2003. He is the only surgeon in the area to have done a fellowship in complex robotic and laparoscopic surgery, and he is the codirector of the robotic surgical program.

Robotic Radical Prostatectomy for Prostate Cancer: Dr. Bhayani performs da Vinci robotic prostatectomy for prostate cancer. Nerve-sparing techniques can be used to minimize side effects. Each case is individualized, and Dr. Bhayani prefers that you bring your family with you for counseling on prostate cancer. Dr. Bhayani often sees patients who desire a second opinion for the treatment of prostate cancer.

Kidney Cancer, Tumors and Masses (Renal masses): Dr. Bhayani specializes in laparoscopic and robotic kidney removal (laparoscopic radical nephrectomy), and laparoscopic and robotic partial nephrectomy. He pioneered the da Vinci robotic nephrectomy and da Vinci robotic partial nephrectomy with the high-definition 4 arm approach. He is one of the only surgeons in the world who performs laparoscopic, open, robotic, and percutaneous kidney surgery. Dr. Bhayani’s unique approach may be able to save your kidney, and still remove the kidney tumor. Dr. Bhayani has trained hundreds of urologists in surgery of the kidney during instructional courses around the country, and he has performed hundreds of these surgeries. He has operated on patients from around the United States. If you would like a second opinion on your case, feel free to call. Please remember to bring a copy of your X-rays to your appointment.

Ureteropelvic Junction (UPJ) Obstruction: Dr. Bhayani performs laparoscopic pyeloplasty and da Vinci robotic pyeloplasty for UPJ obstruction. This surgery is complex and requires advanced laparoscopic suturing skills to be effective. Dr. Bhayani specializes in this technique for both older children and adults.

Other conditions treated: General urology, BPH, kidney stones, bladder cancer, laparoscopic adrenal removal, adrenal cancer, elevated PSA, enlarged prostate, testicular cancer, complex kidney cysts, urinary tract infections, blood in the urine, erectile dysfunction.
