Residency alum to receive Amos award

John OlsonJohn Olson Jr., MD, PhDJohn Olson Jr., MD, PhD, a 1998 graduate of the Washington University General Surgery Residency Program, has been selected to receive the first Keith D. Amos, MD, Alumni Award. Olson will give a lecture in honor of Amos at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, in Connor Auditorium at the Farrell Learning and Teaching Center on the Medical Campus. A reception will be held at 4:15 p.m.

Amos, a 2004 graduate of the residency program, was an assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, N.C. He died unexpectedly June 24, 2013, in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he was a visiting scholar. He was 42.

Olson is the Campbell and Jeanette Plugge Professor and vice chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore.  His presentation – a tribute to Amos – is titled “The Modern Breast Surgeon.”
