Conferences

Fellows Conference is held weekly on Tuesdays from noon to 1 p.m. in the 84ICU conference room, except for the last Tuesday of each month. This multidisciplinary conference typically consists of lectures given by SICU staff (attendings/fellows/pharmacists/dieticians) as well as by local and national experts in critical care. The subject matter is diverse, ranging from ethics/end-of-life issues through cutting-edge basic science talks on the molecular biology of critical illness/genetic susceptibility to sepsis, to "bread and butter" critical care topics such as the management of acute coronary syndromes or management of intracranial hypertension. Journal club is also held intermittently throughout the year (in lieu of lecture) to give the fellows and faculty a chance to analyze and dissect current critical care literature. Each fellow is required to give a talk at conference twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring.

UBQI (Quality Improvement) Conference is held on the last Tuesday of the month from noon until approximately 2 p.m. This multidisciplinary conference is attended by the faculty, fellows, nursing leadership, dietary, pharmacy and selected representatives from the hospital (blood bank, radiology IT, etc.). QI includes a monthly review of ICU statistics (admissions, discharges, infection rates, etc.), SICU morbidity and mortality from the prior month, and a wide variety of SICU issues, which vary from month to month.

SICU Housestaff Education Core Lecture Series is a group of 16 lectures of 15 to 30 minutes given every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 1 p.m. (two lectures on either Wednesday or Thursday on alternating weeks). The purpose of this lecture series is to give residents rotating through the SICU an exposure to basic critical care topics. Of the 16 lectures, fellows are responsible for giving four of them -- ventilator management, central lines, vasoactive drugs and endotracheal intubation. The entire series is managed by the administrative fellow, who makes the monthly schedule.

Pulmonary Medicine Core Topics Conference is given various days over the summer from 11 a.m. to noon for the new fellows.

Optional Conferences

Outcomes Subcommittee — In addition to the monthly QI meeting, the SICU has a separate outcomes committee that is dedicated to specific areas of clinical concern as well as a review of all incident reports received for the previous month. Many research studies are initiated out of Outcomes Subcommittee, which meets the first Thursday of each month at 2:30. Fellows who are interested in clinical research and/or improvement of care delivery processes in the SICU are urged to attend. Fellows have historically played a major role in translating new studies/ideas from outcomes subcommittee to the bedside.

Basic Science Research Conference — Many of the SICU attendings are funded by the NIH. Drs. Hotchkiss and Mazuski share a multidisciplinary laboratory meeting each Wednesday at noon that fellows are welcome to attend.

Surgical Morbidity and Mortality Conference — 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in Scarpellino Auditorium.

Pulmonary/Critical Care Grand Rounds — 11 a.m. Thursdays beginning in September in the East Pavilion Auditorium.

Trauma Patient Care Conference — 10 a.m. Tuesday in 84ICU conference room.

General Surgery Conference/Grand Rounds — 7 a.m. Wednesday in Steinberg Auditorium.

Anesthesiology Grand Rounds — 6:30 a.m. Wednesdays in Wohl Auditorium.
