Sub-Internships

The Division of Urology welcomes students from other institutions to rotate on our service. Both sub-internships and research electives are available. Sub-internships last for one month. The clinical experience is principally at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. There is exposure to ALL major disciplines in urology (open and minimally invasive oncology, trauma/reconstructive procedures, robotic and minimally invasive procedures, stones and endourology). Opportunities are available to rotate at St. Louis Children's Hospital (pediatrics) or Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital (female and neurourology, including outpatient clinic and urodynamics), depending on the interests of the applicant.

Sub-interns are integrated into the housestaff team. Daily duties include rounding with the housestaff, participation in the operative schedule and spending time in the outpatient clinic setting. Sub-interns will have the opportunity to engage with ALL faculty during their rotation. There is no overnight call. Sub-interns will have an opportunity to present a Grand Rounds lecture on a topic of their choice.

According to Washington University School of Medicine policy, the student must receive academic credit for his/her participation in this elective. A written evaluation of the student’s performance will be required upon completion of the elective. To complete an application, go to the Association of American Medical Colleges Visiting Student Application Service.

Interested students can also set up research electives. Students should contact Dr. Steven Brandes at brandess@wudosis.wustl.edu to set up an interview to determine their research interest so that they can be paired with a suitable faculty mentor. The faculty mentor and student will then develop a research project and agenda for a research elective in accordance with WUSM policy.

Housing options are available upon acceptance and are coordinated through the Curriculum Office.
